Sexual Health Sexual health is important to both men and women. However, it's a topic that many of us find difficult to approach. Thus, many of us don't know when we are having a problem or what causes these problems.
- Men - There are many sexual health issues that face men throughout their lives. Perhaps the most common and devastating is erectile dysfunction. The term erectile dysfunction is replacing the word impotency in many medical circles simply because it is a more accurate description. At least half of all men between the ages of 40 and 72 have at least occasional problems either getting or keeping an erection, or both. While nearly all men have experienced erectile dysfunction at one time or another, at least twenty million American men are chronic sufferers. Men who have high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease are four times more likely to suffer from this condition. Smoking also increases the chances of erectile dysfunction. Difficulties achieving erection was once labeled as being mentally or emotionally induced until more recent times. Now, doctors know that most of the causes are physical. This means that the problem is more easily treatable. The most common cause of erectile dysfunction is circulatory. By increasing circulation, erection frequency and duration are greatly improved.
- Women - Lack of sexual desire affects 43% of all women. Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD), includes low sex drive, slow arousal, difficulty in achieving orgasm and painful intercourse. The causes can stem from emotional and/or physical roots that need to be addressed respectively. Relationship issues often lead to sexual shutdown and can be effectively treated through counseling. Biochemical causes of female sexual dysfunction as well as poor diet, lack of exercise and daily stress also sap sexual energy which results in vaginal dryness, clitoral insensitivity and lack of interest.
