Triglycerides, or TG’s, are fatty compounds that circulate in the bloodstream and are stored in fat tissue. High levels of TG’s result in hypertriglyceridemia and increase the risk of heart disease. Diabetes often causes high levels of TG’s. Two symptoms of high triglycerides are pancreatitis, an enlarged liver or spleen, and xanthomas, fatty deposits developing in the skin. Sometimes there are no symptoms of high triglycerides until heart disease or diseases in the blood vessels develop.
Recommendations for reducing TG’s are to lose weight and lower the consumption of processed foods, simple sugars, alcohol, and saturated fats. Also, there are several supplements and herbs that can help lower TG levels. The supplements are fish oils, cod liver oil, pantethine, niacin (vitamin B3), calcium, chromium, L-carnitine, and fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS). Some herbs aiding in reducing TG levels are guggul, garlic, fenugreek, psyllium, and green tea. A way of preventing heart disease is to monitor and maintain a healthy level of triglycerides. Begin today to reduce high triglyceride levels and help ensure a healthy heart.
