Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia, is a progressive disorder characterized by widespread neuronal loss, beta-amyloid deposits in the cerebral blood vessels, development of neuritic plaques and the presence of neurofibrillary tangles. These changes, occurring in the association area of the cerebral cortex, the hippocampus and the middle and temporal lobes, are accompanied by decreased concentrations of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Recent US census figures suggest that by 2050, the number of people with AD will triple. A recent report suggests high copper levels in tap water may play a role in causing Alzheimer's disease.
While scientists have not fully determined the actual causes of Alzheimer’s disease, a number of treatment options have been proposed or tried over the years. Studies show that people who eat an average of 180 mg or more a day of DHA, a fatty acid found in fish oils, had about 40% less Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia. Acety-L-Carnitine protects against amyloid-beta neurotoxicity. Borage Oil boosts the transmission of nerve impulses. NADH may help improve cognitive dysfunction. Other supplements that may help are therapy with B vitamins that lower homocysteine levels, Vitamin E, Ginkgo Biloba, Curcumin, and green tea.
